Abia Teachers Recruitment Shortlisted 9,371, CBT Next, Govt. to Hire 5,000 – The Abia State Government has shortlisted 9,371 people for the teachers’ recruitment process. These people will take a computer-based test (CBT) on a date that will be announced soon.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, shared this news after a meeting led by Governor Alex Otti. He explained that the online application portal was closed on February 12, 2025. A total of 29,797 people applied.
Out of these, only 9,371 were selected to move to the next stage. These shortlisted applicants will take the CBT exam. Those who pass will be invited for an interview. After the interview, the best candidates will be given teaching jobs.
The Commissioner said that the process is fair and based on merit. He assured everyone that only qualified people would be employed.
He also announced that on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Governor Alex Otti will launch a big education program called ABIAFIRST. The theme of the program is “Re-imagining Education in Abia, Unleashing the Potential of Every Abia Youth.”
Prince Kanu described this as a big step that will change education in Abia. He said it will provide top-quality education to every child in the state.
He also said that the government has made the Igbo language a compulsory subject in schools. All students from primary school to SS2 must learn Igbo.
He explained that the Igbo language is a key part of the identity of the people of Abia. Teaching it in schools will help children stay connected to their culture. The government believes that making Igbo compulsory will help in a larger plan to improve culture and society.
Prince Kanu also shared another major change in education. The study of History has been reintroduced in Abia schools. This decision takes effect immediately.
He said that history is very important for any society that wants to grow. Without knowing history, a people cannot truly progress. Abia State has a rich history, and the government wants to ensure that children learn about their past.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, added more details about this. He said that even though History was compulsory before, many of the lessons repeated what was already in Civic Education.
Now, a new curriculum has been approved. It will be used from the next academic year. However, Abia State has the right to make changes to its curriculum. The government will update the history lessons to include important facts about the Igbo people.
Elder Ubochi explained that when students complete secondary school, they should understand the history that makes the Igbo people unique.
Speaking on the teachers’ recruitment, Elder Ubochi revealed a major update. At first, the government planned to hire 2,500 teachers. However, the Governor has now approved the recruitment of 5,000 teachers instead.
He explained that this decision was made after seeing the large number of students enrolling in public schools. Since education is now free and compulsory, more children are attending school.
Because of this, there is a need for more teachers to handle the increase in students. The government believes that hiring 5,000 teachers will help improve the education system.
Elder Ubochi assured that the recruitment process would be completed soon. Once finished, the newly employed teachers will start work in schools across the state.
Other government officials attended the press briefing. These included the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation, Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor. Also present was the Media and Publicity Adviser, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Citizen Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
The government is taking steps to improve education in Abia State. With the ABIAFIRST program, more teachers, and changes in school subjects, the goal is to give children better learning opportunities. The focus is on making education accessible, meaningful, and connected to the culture and history of the people.
